Scene III. Incremental Construction Scene II. Under the Freeway Scene I. Early Stage of Construction Scene V. Playground Scene IV. Housing Cluster This settlement system addresses the underlaying causes of homelessness in Oakland, California, including lack of elder care, high rate of crime, and fi nancial and medical crises. The settlement grows from the central marketplace which serves as a material shop during construction and gradually transfer into a free market. The development framework is composed of diff erent programmatic modules. Each module is made up of a living unit and/or a communal program that sustains one of the three functional systems: food production, services, and infrastructure and construction. Modules can be added or subtracted from the framework and they are inter-connected both physically by secondary streets and programmatically by supply chains. 34 OTHER ACADEMIC WORKS | INCREMENTAL COMMUNITY Individual Study | Summer 2022
