KALEIDESCOPE SCHOOL
Core I P02 (Team Project) | Harvard GSD | Fall 2023
With two age groups of young womxn under one roof, this project aimed to create an environment
that grows confidence, mentorship, and collaboration among and between girls. This ethos of
constant, meaningful exchange carried through the design.
Externally and internally, creating moments of visibility across multiple levels was crucial to the
concept. The programs trace two ramps, which wind around a central void, providing constant
moments of interaction and spinning views of students across floor heights and age groups.
The ramps allow one to skip floors and spontabeously land in an unexpected space like a film
montage. The two ramps start from opposite directions, invisible to each other, and meet in an
ambulatory, cyclical moment, creating the kaleidescope experience.
The envelope slopes in two directions, and navigates a change in grade across the site, equivalent
to height of one fl oor. This occurs both in grade and in plan, as classrooms and making studios
follow the two slopes and blend the fl oors into interconnected, tiered levels.
Kaleidescope refers both literally to the visual and bodily experience in the building but also
metaphorically as the multifaceted education ideology that is intended to inspire endless
potentials of the students.Section Unrolled
