It is a mediator between outdoor and indoor, public and private. The house takes on the mediating nature of the stairs and creates an intimate yet mutually independent living environment for two households: an autistic artist and his care-taker who also works as a performer. The stair separates the two units while becoming a space of comingling and interaction. And its growth projects both programmtically onto the rooms and formally onto the elevational stacking.
